You have heard about how good the cross country skiing is in the Snowy Mountains - now find out just how good are the cross country bike trails in Kosciuszko National Park! The Snowy Mountains already has hundreds of kilometres of riding on former Snowy Scheme dirt roads, on fire trails and along transformed tracks that now serve cross country bikers. The best news of all is of course, that the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will complete construction of a multi-use track from Thredbo to Lake Crackenback - that's over 15 kilometres of mostly downhill along the spectacular Thredbo River with two major crossings and delivering riders to the historic Bullock's Hut. Wonderful spring rains have recently opened the mountains for walkers with a great mix of walkways, tracks, some snow drifts and expansive views across the mountains and into some of the long still skiable gullies! The time is now to catch the very first wildflowers with early buttercups and marsh marigolds popping up and some impressive sub-alpine wildflower displays. Once again, the mountains will deliver spectacular fields of alpine and subalpine wildflowers and spring is a good time to visit the mountains and enjoy the cooler temperatures. If you plan to walk to the Summit of Mt Kosciuszko - there are significant snow drifts so wear reasonably strong footwear to achieve purchase on the snow, alternatively, talk to K7 and we will guide you through some awesome terrain on snow shoes and make the final ascent of Kosi on snow shoes. It won't be long before the Thredbo walking track is fully open - remember if you plan to walk in the Snowy Mountains in spring, the weather can change suddenly and winds are cool. The walk to the top of Australia - Mt Kosciuszko with K7 Adventures - is surprisingly beautiful at any time of year. Spring is a special season when the first of the flowers begin to absorb the sunlight the Marsh Marigolds making an appearance beneath the melting snow and ice in the alpine fens. Congratulations to all competitors and prize winners in the 2011 National Interschools Cross Country Ski Championships!

The weather and snow conditions for training in Victoria were hardly ideal - however - the spirit of participation and competition prevailed with several teams and individuals training on limited snow and ice. Then the day opened to almost perfect conditions with fresh snow, blue skies and plenty of happy and enthusiastic skiers, parents and team managers.

Special congratulations to Scotts, Tudor House, Ascham-Cranbrook, SMGS, MLC, Jindabyne Central and Monaro High for strong performances.

YES - it is officially winter with a great overnight fall of snow and more to come! Winter is here and already the snowploughs are clearing the Thredbo Village area. The signs are good with the water catchment bursting with a full complement of moisture after months of good rain and now, very cold and dry nights. The snow yesterday was dry and light and should stay that way until at least the end of the week. With the Snowy Mountains Catchments full of water - the ground will freeze and stay cold to capture every flake of snow for a great winter!

The Snowy Mountains weeks have rolled by and at K7 Adventures we have fully enjoyed the full range of adventures and pleasures of the high country! The climbing this season has been just amazing with plenty of scope to explore new mini tors and crag. The highlight of summer was definitely the several informal trips to Blue Lake. The NPWS have worked hard on track maintenance with more to do on the access route to Blue Lake currently closed (access carefully past the Blue Lake lookout). This year, the alpine summer flowers have been just stunning due to the consistent spring and early summer rains. The summer flower season has been one of the best in living memory and for people who are yet to enjoy the beauty of the Kosciuszko Alpine Flora, jot 'January 2012' into your diaries. This summer the wildflowers in the Snowy Mountains are truly magnificent! After good spring rain and mild temperatures, the flowers are making one of the best showings on records with literally fields of Snow Daisies bursting across the top of Australia. The billy buttons are also opening into fields of gold and eyebrights displaying their subtle tones of purple, white and blue. The next two weeks of January are definitely the time to visit the High Country of Australia to enjoy the best alpine flowers on offer. K7 Adventures joined Di Westaway and her team from Wild Women on Top to climb Seven Summits in one day in the Australian High Country. Starting from Dead Horse Gap, a team of 12 led by K7 Adventures Guide Acacia Rose, climbed South Ramshead, Ramshead, the two unnamed peaks, North Ramsead, Mt Kosciuszko and later in the day, Mt Townsend.

The climax of the day was the meeting of the second Wild Women on Top team walking the Main Range Track led by local guide Philip Hannam, arriving on top of Mt Kosciuszko at 2 pm for the shared celebration.

The 100th Anniversary of Freda da Faur ascending Mt Cook in an historic climb, was a day to remember with the Wild Women on Top high in Australia and high in spirits!

In New Zealand, celebrations were afoot to commemorate the Freda da Faur climb and the Australian Wild Women on Top team called in to the Hermitage at Mt Cook to share the moment!

In Australia - the weather opened up just for the weekend in a very Freda moment with a few shower bursts around the walking teams with only a few drops shedding on the Wilkinson Valley campsite later in the evening.

K7 Adventures joins ‘Wild Women on Top’ to Celebrate Australian Mountaineer, Emmeline Freda Du Faur

Director of Wild Women on Top Di Westaway has invited K7 Adventures to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first female ascent of Mt Cook by Australian self-made rock climber and mountaineer, Emmeline Freda du Faur. Two teams will walk to Mt Kosciuszko, one team taking the more challenging route via the South Ramshead and climbing 5 peaks culminating at the summit of Mt Kosciuszko.

Freda Du Faur is perhaps Australia’s least well-known mountaineer, a woman before her time, who in 1908 began an extraordinary career. Born in Croydon Sydney Australia, Freda Du Faur frequented Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, walking and climbing before heading to NZ as young woman. She visited the Hermitage at Mt Cook and teamed up with the chief guide who introduced her to mountaineering. Her relative freedom of spirit and independence of means meant that the local guides also had an opportunity to further their mountaineering challenges. Du Faur’s first ascent was Mount Sealy in 1909 followed by an historic ascent of Mt Cook or ‘Aoraki’ (3760m) on 3 December 1910, accompanied by local guides Peter and Alec Graham. Hers was the first female ascent of Mt Cook and the fastest ascent of the mountain to date in a record 6 hours. 'I gained the summit … feeling very little, very lonely and much inclined to cry'. In the same season, she climbed Mounts De la Beche (2979m), Green (2828m) and Chudleigh (2944m a first ascent). Breaking with convention as an unmarried woman, she shared her tent with her guides and dressed as she saw fit for mountaineering. Climbing late in the following season, year, she ascended a virgin peak later named Mount Du Faur (2389 m), Mount Nazomi (2953 m, first ascent), Mount Tasman (3497 m, second ascent), Mount Dampier (3430 m, first ascent), and Mount Lendenfeld (3192 m, second ascent). In her final climbing season Du Faur made first ascents and named Mount Pibrac (2567 m) and Mount Cadogan (2398 m) after her female lover Muriel Cadogan whom she met at the Dupain Institute of Physical Education in Sydney. On 4 January 1913 along with her guides Peter Graham and David Thomson, she accomplished an incredible feat for which she is renowned — the first grand traverse of the three peaks of Mount Cook. The grand traverse is regarded as the classic climb of the New Zealand Alps. On 10 February the same party made the first traverse of Mount Sefton (3149 m). World War I interrupted Du Faur’s mountaineering and climbing however, not the publication of her book “The Conquest of Mount Cook and other climbs: an account of four seasons’ mountaineering on the Southern Alps of New Zealand.” Freda du Faur was the leading amateur climber of her day. Tragedy took the life of Freda Du Faur on 11 September 1935. She was thought to be ‘sensitive and highly strung’ and today, to have had bipolar disorder. Du Faur was finally recognised in Australia on 3 December 2006 when a NZ memorial stone was placed at her gravesite in Manly Cemetery.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Serviced (DECCW) has introduced a new system to regulate commercial activities in the NSW National Parks and this includes a comprehensive process that culminates in accreditation by an external organisation prior to awarding a three or ten year Eco Pass.

K7 Adventures is at first base with a one year Eco Pass with additional phases including external accreditation of our tours in Kosciuszko National Park, Blue Mountains National Park, Deua National Park and other locations.

We welcome the advice and support of National Parks and Wildlife Service staff, especially the guidance of the Kosciuszko National Park staff at Jindabyne who have been an invaluable source of information and practical advice.

The Snowy Mountains walking season is well and truly open with recent rains topping up the catchment and flushing the rivers. The sub-alpine flowers are blooming and crystal clear streams attracting birds and native animals to drink with plenty of good fishing. The Snowy Mountains Trout Fishing Festival was as usual well attended and with the lakes at brimming point, there is plenty to see and do. The best surprise of the month was the release of 18 gigalitres of water from Lake Jindabyne into the Snowy River and the crowds flocked to watch the spectacle of water spraying into the plunge pool and delivering for the first time in 40 years, a magnificent and swift flow into the Snowy River. The Victorian elections was the occasion that prompted the long overdue flow into the Snowy River. The Sydney Canoe club celebrated with a flock of kayakers dropping in below the dam wall and testing the gorge and rapids - apparently an amazing experience with a couple of people 'in the swim'. The river flowed fast past Dalgety and onwards with friends of the Snowy River near the sea waiting to capture the sight. K7 Adventures owner Peter Cocker and Alpine Riverkeeper Acacia Rose joined with friends to celebrate the Snowy River coming to life once again. We will continue to advocate for life for the Snowy, from its upper reaches below Guthega Dam and Island Bend all the way to the sea. Connectivity is the key to the river's health. Spring weather has brought the usual warmer days, cool nights and rapid snow melt delivering some of the best water into the twelve major rivers and their tributaries in the Snowy Mountains. As the rivers rise access via the Snowy River crossing to the Main Range is more challenging, however, good spring skiing via Thredbo and the Ramsheads including Mt Kosciuszko is on offer! The Kosciuszko Walkway is opening up for walkers with some significant snow patches remaining. Snowshoers can still enjoy long stretches of winter white and spring lovers are already reveling in the first alpine flowers, the beautiful Marsh Marigolds and some tiny Stackhousia appearing from beneath the snow patches. For the adventurers and active mountain thrill seekers, for walkers and cross country mountain bikers - now is the time to enjoy the Snowy Mountains. Even with a 'light' winter in the Snowy Mountains the Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School has maintained a strong flow of instruction during the weeks and on the weekends. With the July snow falls the Perisher Nordic Trails were opened and instruction and races continued as per usual winter schedules.

The Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School is expanding its instructor base inviting younger skiers to enrol in the Australian Professional Snowsports Instructor Course (www.apsi.net.au - go to Nordic) and become a part of the thriving Australia snow sports sector. Instructor training is an excellent way to identify and refine skiing skills as well as essential to learning how to teach skills to a range of skiers, from beginners, to intermediate and advanced.

As well as the Perisher Nordic Trails - the road to Perisher Gap - thanks to the Perisher Groomers - and Charlotte Pass has been an excellent route for classical and skate skiers. Now, with warmer temperatures the road needs a further top up possible this weekend with more snow on the way!

The Ski School will continue to operate from the Perisher Nordic Shelter over the coming weeks with snow forecast into August.

The blizzard has arrived! At last after weeks of waiting the storm front blew into the Snowy Mountains yesterday with gale force winds and driving rain. Nordic Ski Classes for Australian juniors has taken off with enthusiastic skiers joining the Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School at Blue Cow Perisher Valley most afternoons and on Saturday mornings. OLYMPIC ATHLETES JOIN APSI LEVEL 1 NORDIC COURSE

The peak snowsports body in Australia, the Australian Professional Snowsports Instructors (APSI) recently conducted a Level 1 Nordic Ski Instructors Course for the Olympic athletes, Ben Sim, Alex Almoukov, Lucy Glanville, Siobhan Jones and Tom Ashton. As well as being elite competitive skiers these young professionals will now become Nordic Ski Instructors combining the best of race experience at the top level with the fundamentals of 'how to teach' and professionalism that is a part of the APSI Course. The Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School Director Zac Zaharias was the nominated APSI Instructor for the course with APSI Technical Director Warren Feakes conducting a parallel course for trainees. The Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School wishes Australia's elite Nordic Ski athletes all the best with their respective careers.

The winter 2010 Snow Shoeing season is open with good snow cover in the Ramshead Range. It's official. Snow finally fell in reasonable quantities setting the base for a strong winter with great ski, boarding and snow shoeing opportunities. The blizzard that blew across the Snowy Mountains in the last 24 hours will be followed closely by further snowfalls over the next 48 hours. For nordic skiers at Perisher it won't be long before there is sufficient base for the groomers and in the interim - fun to be had on the beginner's loop in front of the Nordic Shelter. Good snow is finally on the way for the opening weekend in the Australian Snowy Mountains. Cold and recent good rain has enabled the ground to become saturated and freeze, setting the base for snow making in the resorts and the ultimate ski season starter - a great weather system moving quickly across the southern part of the continent. ZAC ZAHARIAS DIRECTOR OF KOSCIUSZKO CROSS COUNTRY SKI SCHOOL REACHES EVEREST SUMMIT

Zac Zaharias, mountaineer, rock and ice climbing instructor and Director of the Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School has reached the summit of Mt Everest as a part of the Adelaide based Duncan Chessell team.

This is Zac's third and most successful expedition to Mt Everest, the team waiting out snow and strong winds to make the ascent yesterday afternoon EST. Zac Zaharias was a team leader with the Australian Bicentennial Expedition to Mt Everest in 1988 - the first Australian ascent by the SW Route, and again attempted Everest in 2001 however was forced to abandon the summit when a South Australian climber from another expedition stumbled into his tent and later died in his arms.

Zac spent the Australian 2010 summer training overseas in the Nordic Skiing Masters Series for his 2010 Everest attempt. In 2009 Zac Zaharias directed the Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School during its first successful year and plans to return as Director in 2010. The Everest ascent is a highlight in Zac's impressive career as a climber, mountaineer and skier including as President of the Canberra Climbers Association. Also from the CCA is Chris Warner who teamed up with Zac for the Everest expedition. The Chessell Adventures team approached Everest from China and successfully summitted yesterday and is now descending via the Nepalese side of Mt Everest making a complete traverse of the world's highest peak. Katie Sarah, Rob North, Richard Moriaty, James Nettleton, Richard Agnew and Chris Warner also made it to the summit of Mt Everest. K7 Adventures Ice Climbing Instructor and Director of the Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School Zac Zaharias has arrived at Everest Base Camp and has acclimatised ready to ascend Everest and traverse then descend via the Khombu icefall. Duncan Chessel is leading a strong team including Zac and Chris Warner - this will be a return visit for Zac to Mt Everest. Zac Zaharias a former distinguished military officer was awarded the Conspicuous Service Medal in 1998, and led the Australian Bicentennial Team in 2001 to Mt Everest. His climbing and mountaineering career includes 11 seasons and 40 summits in New Zealand, a raft of Himalayan, Tibetan and Karakoram climbs as well as Mt Denali Alaska and Mt Kilimanjaro Tanzania. Zac's quiet and unassuming manner belies his considerable climbing, people and skiing skills, his capacity to endure tough and demanding conditions and negotiate difficult situations. This year, Zac's preparation included skiing in the Nordic Skiing Masters, putting hundreds of kilometres behind him in preparation for the Everest trip.

AUTUMN CLIMBING - SNOWY MOUNTAINS

Just days before winter finally settles over the Snowy Mountains in an expected snow fall on Friday 21 May (one month exactly before the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere and one month before the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere) the autumn weather is brilliant, clear blue skies warming a frosted landscape. And making the absolute most of the warmth on granite - Peter Cocker from K7 Adventures, Climbing & Abseiling Guide Matt Barnes and Acacia Rose donned climbing shoes and enjoyed some short and sharp climbs in the Snowies. The mid-morning and early afternoon autumn sun created a blissful window where the granite was sufficiently warm before the ice catches tiny quartz crystals making climbing a finger testing 'zero degrees' challenge! Eagle Rock - adjacent to Eagle's Nest Restuarant at the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chair Thredbo is an amazing and complete granite crag with chimney, corner-layback, aretes, finger crack, easy climbs, exposed corners and fun scrambling. NO THANK YOU TO WASTE DUMP ON THE X-COUNTRY SKI TRAILS AT PERISHER

Of concern is the proposal by NPWS DECC to build a 'waste transfer centre' bang smack at the base of the X-Country Ski Trails at Perisher Valley! In time, NSW Government Sydney Central plans to sell off municipal waste and water facilities and that could include the Perisher facility, paid for by everyone who enters KNP, only to be sold off to a private concern. The skidoo access to the facility also directly intersects the access to the Perisher Nordic Shelter and the road access takes a big bite out of the access from the Perisher Car Park and Ski Tube to the Perisher Nordic Shelter. There must be a better way!

WATER FOR THE SNOWY RIVER

K7 Adventures also hopes that the NSW Government sees the light and allows the Snowy River a bit of life. The main range replenished by good rainfalls is constantly feeding life giving flows to the creeks and Snowy River above Guthega Dam, however the Snowy River below Guthega Dam and Island Bend Dam needs a big drink and a permanent environmental flow.

The amazing & diverse wildflower display in the Snowy Mountains has once again started early with a range of species already popping up some weeks earlier than expected. The result is some truly beautiful and surprising flourishes of colour alongside walking tracks. The Rainbow Lake track for example on the Kosciuszko Road on way to Perisher Valley is a delightful short walk with an abundance of flowers to enjoy, the track ending at the calming lake - a great spot for a family picnic. The Kosciuszko walk from Thredbo is also rewarding with a range of flowers in bloom; buttercups, marsh marigolds, heath and rice flowers. The native orchids are already showing their soft colours and at lower altitudes a profusion of yellow marks the road to the alpine flora display.

ROCK CLIMBING SEASON OPEN IN SNOWY MOUNTAINS

Spring has arrived suddenly with the first of the marsh marigolds and buttercups blooming and the last of the big snowy drifts steadily melting and pouring vital flows into the alpine streams and rivers. Pity more spring melt did not make it into the Snowy River! Too much money to be made by too few when the rivers need their life-giving flows. Meanwhile, the Snowy Mountains Rock Climbing Season is now open with good climbs - beginner to advanced - ready to be climbed just out of Thredbo. Catch the chairlift (Snowgums operating until early December when the Kosi Chair re-opens) and walk to Eagle's Nest with K7 Adventures and head out for some truly magnificent climbing. Everyone is welcome - K7 caters for children and has found some easy beginners' climbs and abseils as well as the really, really hard stuff (trad and top rope) on some gnarly granite but with unreal views. SPRING SNOW CLIMBING - WALKING SEASON OPEN

Snow climbing on sepia snow is certainly a novel experience on the last of the big drifts near Thredbo. K7 Adventures made the most of the last opportunity to lace on crampons and take out the ice axes and practice a few skills on the Signature Hill drifts. The snow is definitely melting fast and although the surface is slippery and surprisingly consolidated for skiing the dust that blew across Eastern Australia some weeks ago has left a dirty film on top and also on the vegetation. Now, the Kosciuszko Summer Walking Season is open and the walkway open all the way to Rawson's Pass. The final climb to the Kosciuszko Summit is on snow - the brown snow firmer than the rapidly melting cover of fresh snow from around 1 month ago. Snow shoes certainly make the ascent and descent safer however, there is plenty of fun to be had glissading or sliding off the summit. It won't be long before this will be too difficult with rocks poking through the snow surface and it is only a matter of a couple of weeks before the Summit Road will be open for walkers. DUMPING SNOWS

WoW! Wake up to a spring day in the Snowy Mountains and what do you get - almost a winter's worth of dumping snows. The trees putting on their spring spurt and suddenly weighed down by unimaginable cms of snow and the birds are flying - not quite in circles - looking for an extra something to stay warm. The unexpected and good snow falls arising from a deep low pressure system off the NSW South Coast and prevailing winds have dropped snow right across the Monaro from Brown Mountain, to Numbla Vale, Dalgety, Cooma, Berridale, Adaminaby and of course, Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains proper. Gusty winds today mean that back country travel is definitely out - however Saturday looks like a good day for a bit of a ski or snow shoe and Monday also is a window in an otherwise brilliant fortnight of brrrrr - cold, snowy, sometimes windy and fortunately white spring weather. K7 Adventures will commence snow shoe and ski touring trips once again on Thursday 15 October after the big falls have come and gone. Our spring back country ski camp is on hold for another week. SPRING SKIING CONDITIONS FANSTASTIC

Spring Skiing Conditions in the Snowy Mountains are just fanstastic with a layer of crystals on top in the early morning with the snow softening during the day and some slopes remaining - well fast and firm and others - still icy whilst the sun changes its angle and gradually melts the mountains! Meanwhile, a good contingent of Thredbo locals headed out for the Kosi Spring Skiing Pilgrimage - Hots Shots photography crew, Thredbo identity Heinz, pro-telemark skier Mick, Altitude Cafe owner Steve, Acacia and Peter from K7 Adventures, Jindabyne Sports people Janini and Adrian and Jeff, Dennis and Mary ... the list goes on and the gathering on the summit (and believe it or not it was freezing on top) enjoyed the turns down Kosciuszko, leaping off the cornice or skiing the long run down the SW Ridge. Great fun and another day of fantastic spring skiing conditions today.

STRONG PERFORMANCES BY JUNIOR RACERS - PERISHER NORDIC FREESTYLE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AUGUST 2009

The National Championship Freestyle Races at Perisher Valley were strongly attended by national and international competitors preparing for the 2010 Olympics. Although warm weather softened the track towards midday the racers were nevertheless fast. Thanks to excellent race co-ordination all races were completed in time for an excellent barbeque lunch at the Perisher Nordic Shelter. Young and older racers enjoyed the day including the 60+ age group competing in the freestyle 5 km. Next weekend - Snowy Mountains Classic at Perisher.

THE PERISHER TO CHARLOTTE PASS 'MARTINI' FINISHES with hot Gluewine, hot chocolate, tasty snacks and some tales tall and very true by veteran of the Australian Cross Country Ski Sector and former Olympian, Ross Martin. Over 300 people gathered at the Kosciuszko Chalet for the presentation of prizes for Classic and Freestyle 8 km race from Perisher Valley to Charlotte Pass. Ross paid tribute to the three senior coaches and instructors, Bob, Warren and Nick who have kept the standards high for the Australian cross country ski sector.

KOSCIUSZKO CHALET WITH CROSS COUNTRY SKATE AND CLASSIC SKIS LINE UP AGAINST THE WALL AFTER THE ALMOST ZERO VISIBILITY 'MARTINI' OR KAC CLASSIC RACE ON WEDNESDAY 12th AUGUST

For the 100th Anniversary of the Kosciuszko Alpine Club - based at Perisher Valley, Charlotte Pass and Thredbo, the 'Martini' also known as the KAC Classic was a great success with over 350 skiers leaving Perisher in virtual 'white out' conditions to ski to the Chalet at Charlotte Pass. Not to be deterred by a bit of weather and very low visibility, veteran skiers some of them more than 85 years old and the very young - some of them less than 10 years old, made the classic journey across Perisher Gap, the Snowy Bridge and onto Charlotte Pass. The enthusiasm and commitment of people to cross country skiing clearly extends for a lifetime a testament not only to the wonderful cross country skiing opportunities in Australia, but also to the strength of the fraternity and great organisation of the races by key players including Peter Ward of the Perisher Nordic Shelter and Peter Cunningham and friends who cut the tracks and placed the invaluable flags in the snow. Towards Charlotte Pass the flags were just brilliant making the invisible - the Kosciuszko Chalet - suddenly a visible finishing post for the 8 km ski. STRONG NORDIC SEASON

The nordic skiing at Perisher Valley this year is just fantastic courtesy of NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service improving the trails and the Perisher-Hans Oversnow Grooming. Skate skiing and classical skiing in cut tracks is both exhilarating and a social event with skiers from 90 years young to - well - just the mites (!) on the trails. Frequently seen in Perisher are the NSW Development Team each morning doing laps of the 10k track! Bring on the 2010 Olympics. Also enjoying the trails early most mornings (fresh snow and freshly groomed trails) is Peter Ward - co-manager of the Perisher Nordic Shelter. With the extensions to the Nordic Shelter there is just more room for enthusiasts, friends and families, many of whom having supported the Nordic Shelter since its inception and participate or watch the stunning ski events and races on 'the sunny side' of Perisher Valley.

INTERSCHOOLS TRAINING AND COMPETITION ALIVE & WELL IN PERISHER

Since the good July snow falls and consistently good grooming of the Perisher Nordic Trails by Hans Oversnow / Perisher Grooming, training for the 2009 NSW Interschools has been in full swing leading to the 19 July races. The Perisher Nordic Shelter was abuzz with excited skiers and their support teams - mostly parents and teachers - encouraged by top quality training by the full team of the Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School Instructors. The finale to a hot week of impressive preparation was the MSR waxing tent setting the skiers for a fast pace on the ski trails. Cross Country Ski Technician / Senior Instructor Warren Feakes was also kept busy in the Scotts waxing tent and with impressive results behind him is an integral part to building skills, competency, speed and race readiness for a number of schools participating in the Interschools competition. Get ready for the August races!

SNOW ON WAY

AT LAST - the mountains will receive a reasonable top up of fresh snow forecast above 1600 metres over the next few days.

The Nordic Trails at Perisher Valley held up well despite a warmer spell of weather and some rain creating patchy and grassy areas. The fresh snow will deliver just the right remedy for the groomers and skiers can look forwards to a great weekend on the trails.

Back Country skiing will be tops with fresh snow on a reasonably strong base and good drifts that has packed down after some rain. Skiing is otherwise patchy in places with good drifts including on Mt Kosciuszko.

Count Down to Opening Weekend

Only a few days to go until the official opening of the Australian Ski Season! The first big dump of snow on Anzac Day completely covered the Snowy Mountains and also Victorian High Country giving up some precious back country skiing for enthusiasts! With the beginning of the 2009 Ski Season just days off skiers, snowboarders, cross country skiers and snow shoers are eagerly awaiting for the first snows. Temperatures are well - low yet not consistently below freezing - and the essential element : precipitation : is hovering somewhere in the atmosphere, maybe Antarctica. Keep posted on this spot for the first images of Cross Country Skiers and the Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School in action. Already - we have enjoyed snow shoeing to Kosciuszko (see our Photos_link) and look forwards to a long and lovely season on snow.

Novel though it may be Australia has yet to see a fully independent school where the instructors collaborate together to provide world class ski lessons and direct client services. However, this is the goal of the the new Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School - to encourage professionalism amongst instructors (and they are APSI Accredited!) and utilise their experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to drive the cross country ski sector. All makes sense especially when the instructors are bursting to be on the snow skate skiing, classic or main range cruising and also bursting with the thrill of putting their weight and a part of their profits behind budding Winter Olympics Skiers. Too good to be true? There is such a concept because the satisfaction and thrills come from assisting the cross country ski sector to blossom to its full potential and bring with it young talent. Amongst the Kosciuszko Cross Country Ski School Instructors is Mike Edmonson - now a well known photographer in the Snowy Mountains - who did just that, once upon a time, represent Australia. Australia - although not big on mountain space as a percentage of the continent is big on enthusiasm for cross country skiing whether in Victoria or NSW. What a way to start the winter! A late autumn blizzard a couple of weeks ago delivered a big dump and we are talking big - two weeks later people are still skiing the chutes at Club Lake, snow shoeing and skiing off Kosi. It doesn't get much better. And for K7 Adventures it meant a bit of a chance to try out some snow climbing near Thredbo as well as take a few clients out to sample the sweet bliss of snow shoeing - dramatic scenery included!

The BIG NEWS is that K7 will open and Cross Country Ski School this winter based at Perisher Valley. Zac Zaharias (see our Guides Page http://www.k7adventures.com/guides.htm) will be the Director of the K7 Cross Country Ski School and Warren Feakes - instructor par excellence - will be the senior instructor along with Graham Hammond and troupe of strong performers in the nordic and skate skiing stakes. Just great with an early winter and according to those truly in the know - when Lake Eyre has water it will be a big winter in the Snowy Mountains - the cross country ski season is looking pretty hot.

Well - if you want to learn to ski, skate ski or take an alpine touring trip this season, just go for it! This year we aim to take resort to resort trips for people who would prefer to overnight in luxury whether you are alpine touring or snow shoeing. We will also take you on a special Dead Horse Gap Trip from Thredbo complete with yummies at the finish (champagne and nibblies or the full gourmet lunch deal) and from Perisher via the oversnow to Charlotte Pass with an alpine touring trip (all downhill) back to Guthega.

Inca Walls - solid routes on crystalline granite

SUMMER, AUTUMN AND EASTER IN THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS

Three months of summer saw moments of intense visitor numbers in the Snowy Mountains - people looking for a 'cool break' to attend the wonderful festivals, Blues, Jindabyne Lake Light Sculpture and Easter Art Show and coming up, the May Jazz Festival in Thredbo. The flower displays were once again spectacular in response to timely good rainfalls although followed by months of drier weather with the alpine catchments looking a little dry. With thunderstorms over the Easter long weekend and more rain forecast in the following days - the mountains are looking refreshed. Night temperatures have already plummeted with frosts appearing across the region. Winter is on way!

Time for a last pitch at Inca Walls before it is too cold to climb. The granite is coarse, grainy and filled with tiny crystals that can be a tiny toehold or at worse, break off under pressure. For this reason, we decided to top rope the first exploratory ascents of Inca and check out the best places for protection for the lead climb.

Lindsay predictably found his way up the wall - cleaning a little debris from the hand traverse and making it to the top. Matthew ascended by an alternate route up the 'Inca Ladder' and across to the wall traversing to the opposite arete with the high hand traverse and up onto the chock stones near the anchors.

The trees have turned on autumn colours across the Monaro region with splendid displays - worth a visit in itself to enjoy the poplars of Berridale and Jindabyne.

Winter is literally around the corner and before long, we will capture the first skiing moments when the predictably early snow falls tempt us from the warmth into winter.

Blue Lake Climbing Superb

K7 Adventures has had a busy summer with plenty of abseiling and climbing! The highlights over the past few weeks has been visiting Blue Lake for Peter to re-climb Dihedral Corner after so many years! Acacia seconded happily in her preferred place on the planet. This was a good opportunity for her to check out more settings for the sequel to Crucible of Ice (set in the Snowy Mountains - cover page for Crucible of Ice is at Blue Lake - Australia - ). Peter ended up abseiling down to remove his favourite cams abandoned by Acacia. The bomber cams simply jammed into the tiny cracks and wedged behind a piece of crystal. 15 minutes of tugging and teasing and the cam sprung free and back onto Peter's rack! Blue Lake also favourite climbing place for K7 Adventures Guide Armando Corvini (check out the photos on K7 Adventures Flickr site) for ice climbing and snow climbing.

New climbs opening up near Thredbo - plenty of granite slabs, cracks and some pretty impressive tors. Oh to be 15 again with a lifetime of climbing ahead! Still - Peter is not holding back after 50 years of climbing .....

Inca Walls

'Inca Walls' close to Thredbo Village in the Snowy Mountains is a spectacular abseil with an initial obstacle of a large finger of rock wedged precariously on a ledge on the wall with the rest of the abseil straightforwards, enjoyable and spectacular. The approach to the wall is from the back of a chain of granite tors is reasonable leading to a rocky area and a gentle grassed reconnaissance point. This abseil enabled us to have a better look at the rock with a view to climbing - graded possibly at 22.

We approached with considerable care - noting the presence of the rare and protected alpine species the Mountains Plum Pine (Podocarpus lawrencei) - the single native conifer above the tree line in the Snowy Mountains. This species typically hugs the granite rocks to absorb warmth yet only grows to 1 m over many hundreds of years! So it is important to step around the Mountain Plum Pine and early flowering plants stimulated by the clearly warmer November temperatures over the last couple of years in the Snowy Mountains.

Once the anchors were in place - K7 Guide Peter Cocker abseiled down the long wall arriving on an inclining slab to complete the abseil on a secure grassy area.
